Lithium batteries, loose or fitted inside equipment, are classed as dangerous goods, and that single fact rules out most of the delivery options people try first. Why lithium batteries are restricted
Lithium batteries can short circuit, overheat and in rare cases catch fire if they're damaged, crushed or packaged incorrectly. That risk is higher in an aircraft hold or a van packed with other parcels, which is exactly why they're governed by international dangerous goods regulations rather than treated like a normal parcel. In the UK, that means the ADR regulations for road transport, and specifically a classification called UN3480 for lithium-ion batteries shipped on their own, or UN3481 for batteries packed with or inside equipment.
What UN3480 and UN3481 actually mean
