Pallet or Parcel Courier? How to Tell Which One You Actually Need

This is one of the most common questions we get on the phone, usually from someone who's already tried to book online and got confused by the options. The honest answer is that it's not really about size, it's about weight, packaging and how the item needs to be handled. Here's how to actually work out which one you need.

Why size alone doesn't decide it

A large but light item, a bulky but empty display stand, for example, might still count as a parcel job if one person can lift and load it safely. Meanwhile a small but genuinely heavy item, like a box of dense machined parts, might need pallet handling even though it wouldn't look out of place next to a stack of normal parcels. Weight and how it needs to be moved matter more than the dimensions on their own.

Parcel courier, when it fits

A same day parcel courier job usually fits when:

• One person can lift and carry it without equipment
• It's already boxed or bagged and doesn't need strapping to a pallet
• You need it collected and delivered directly by one driver, door to door

This covers the vast majority of business deliveries: documents, samples, spare parts, smaller equipment.

Pallet delivery, when it fits

Pallet delivery usually fits when:

• The item is already palletised, or needs to be for safe handling
• It's too heavy to lift manually and needs a pallet truck or forklift at either end
• You're moving a bulk or wholesale quantity of goods, not a single item

A full pallet or a part load both fall into this category, the vehicle and handling are different from a standard parcel run either way.

What happens if you're not sure

Don't guess and hope, tell us the weight, roughly how it's packaged, and whether anyone at the collection or delivery point can lift it unaided. That's enough for us to confirm the right vehicle and service before a driver is booked, rather than a driver turning up unable to take the job.

Does it cost more to get it wrong?

Usually the bigger cost is time, not money. A parcel driver who can't safely move a heavy item has to leave and rebook it as a pallet job, which can mean losing the same-day window entirely. Getting the right service booked from the start avoids that.

If it can be lifted by one person, it's probably a parcel job. If it needs a pallet truck, straps, or more than one person to move safely, it's a pallet job. When in doubt, tell us the weight and packaging and we'll confirm before booking.
